02 / Exhibition focus

“This body of work speaks to the intricate connections that make us part of the living world. It moves between inner and outer life—toward becoming one with oneself and everything else. The individual becomes the group. These images are a portrayal of love through my eyes.”

06 / About
Luz Alondra Sosa Vargas (b. 2001) is a Dominican visual artist and muralist based in Santo Domingo.
A graduate of the National School of Visual Arts (ENAV) and the Altos de Chavón School of Design, she began working with muralism, painting and drawing at a young age. Her practice now also includes performance, installation and video art.
Her research explores connections, identity and memory—asking how the individual converses and intertwines with the collective. From the premise that the small, when gathered, creates the immense, she examines desire, love, the body, union, and the historical and racial forces that shape identity.
She is co-founder of GVL Art Studio and has participated in group and solo exhibitions, including her first solo exhibition in Norway, Tales of Love and Movement (2024). She continues to expand her artistic research from Santo Domingo.

07 / Artist statement
I begin with a central premise: the small, when gathered, creates the immense.
I recognize the particular within the general. I am interested in revealing how the individual becomes a living expression of the larger social whole—and how silent, normative forces can place that individual in the role of an actor without agency.
This actor falls back into a world already made and determined, becoming separated and alienated from it. They create tools to find their place in the “world–no-world”: art, or whatever comes to be valued as such. Any resource may become a way to re-enter the narrative, within the constant struggle between separation and union. An unrecognized being in relation to the whole, carrying a fragmented identity, searches for a place on a map that does not always exist—or changes with every attempt to be found.
Part one
I address the individual who wishes to find themselves within the whole, simply by being. I explore solitude in the search for and encounter with love: in the couple, the family, desire, dreams and the “world–no-world.” These works emerge from my encounters with love, sex, union and desire.
Part two
Here, the individual borders and merges with the collective. I turn toward race and ethnicity, and toward an intentional re-signification of history—a reimagining of the given past. Desire is projected outward through questions: What might we be if so many Taíno people had not been killed? Where does that wound live in the present? I also return to belonging: the place we are meant to occupy, and how nature sometimes passes through and offers an answer.
